Steve,
Thanks for the post. As a former rural school teacher turned community/economic development professional, I couldn't agree more.

In my second year as a teacher, I turned my h.s. economics class into an entrepreneurship class. Unfortunately, at that time, I did not make the connection between growing entrepreneurs and growing stronger rural communities. Instead of teaching them to recognize opportunities in rural communities, I encouraged them to find opportunities in urban settings. In other words, my efforts didn't achieve the goals you outline above.

With this in mind, I would encourage any rural school developing an entrepreneurship program to make sure that efforts connects students to their communities.

Currently, I write for our organization's blog -- www.reimaginerural.com. Because we believe there is a strong connection between strong schools and strong communities, I write occasional posts on education. If you can share more specifics about the programs you mention above, I would love to learn more. Thanks.

AMEN Bill, I couldn't agree more! In fact I would go a step farther, I think that what we really need to be doing in our schools is unleashing thousands of educational entrepreneurs. Our parents are smart enough to figure out what's best for their kids and giving them many choices would allow us to figure out all the best ways to educate kids. Furthermore, I don't believe there is one best school for all kids. We need many different kinds of schools for many different kinds of kids. And our definition of what a school is needs to change. A group of 15 to 20 kids with one teacher can legitimately be a school.

I agree with your criticism of "standardization" and the fact that we should in fact be going away from standardization and toward individualization and customization.

But I think the reason we may not have led the world at any time in test scores but have in creativity and innovation is because in this country we have allowed, emphasized, and stood for freedom. We are free to think, say, and act in ways that are contrary to conventional wisdom (within the legal boundaries). And those "rebels" are not silenced. They may not get their way, but at the end of they day those who have different ideas are mostly respected and allowed to be different. That, in my opinion, is why our country is and will continue to lead the world even if it isn't in standardized test scores.

If the teacher’s comments are valid “it trains them, and their minds, in a certain way of thinking and performing” then that is what Wiggins and McTighe in Schooling by Design would call a framework element that transcends individual content areas. As a framework element, let’s call what the teacher described, critical thinking, the math curriculum would require specific reference to critical thinking in the algebra and higher math courses syllabi, units, etc. The curriculum would need to include specific learning and assessment strategies at each math level. Critical learning would also need to be assessed at each level with a longitudinal rubric. Just teaching algebra with no concept or link to framework elements generally provides non-transferable learning that is not engaging to the students. While I do not advocate not teaching algebra or advanced math, the teacher’s argument does not support their position.

The major problem with this excuse for not changing is that the brain is not a muscle that strengthens with exercise.
I agree Bill. Although I haven't done anything in my career that I couldn't of done without my doctorate. I really agree with your point that it isn't the only path to success. Unfortunately we seem to forget that an education. We focus completely on preparing kids to go to college, and students who decide to take a different path are almost completely on their own to navigate.

Your comments are mostly correct and I feel as though I too have not done enough about this. But that does bring me to the question, what should be done about this? How do we correct this and if we do, are we going to like what we get?

I am obviously a college person. I, like you, have been there many times. I have supported the "enterprise" of higher education, and it is an enterprise. I just don't think it should be the only enterprise valued above all others.

I would not be where I am today without the college degrees I have, but I do remember a moment during my doctoral days, when it became clear to me that I was going to have a lot to learn to be a superintendent rather than just knowing about superintendents. If it weren't for a couple of college professors who also understood this, and made it a requirement to know how to do something rather than just knowing about it, I might not have ever gotten a job.

So, we must do better in whatever level of education we have, with the "technical skills" of being in a carrer area, even those knowledge worker areas.
